Service to the community during dental school included local community health fairs where she would perform limited dental exams, teach children how to brush and floss, and encourage under-represented high-school students to pursue a career in oral surgery. After graduating Columbia in 2015, Karla went on to complete a general practice residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. She then began her oral surgery career by starting a non-categorical internship year at The Brooklyn Hospital Center where she then entered as a resident. During her 5 years at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, she rotated at various hospitals in the tristate area including St. Barnabas and Bronx Care in the Bronx, The Brooklyn VA, and Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania. All these rotations and experiences allowed Karla to learn from dozens of attending surgeons and gain knowledge and experience working with different populations.
